Paternal and maternal lineages via DNA testing

The two most common types of genetic genealogy tests are Y-DNA (paternal line) and mtDNA (maternal line) genealogical DNA tests. Note that Y chromosome and Y-DNA are used interchangeably in this article.

These tests involve the comparison of certain sequences of the DNA of pairs of individuals in order to estimate the probability that they share a common ancestor in a genealogical time frame and, through the use of a Bayesian model published by Bruce Walsh, to estimate the number of generations separating the two individuals from their most recent common ancestor or “mrca”.

Y-DNA testing involves short tandem repeat (STR) and, sometimes, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) testing of the Y-chromosome. The Y-chromosome is present only in males and reveals information on the strict paternal line. These tests can provide insight into the recent (via STRs) and ancient (via SNPs) genetic ancestry. A Y-chromosome STR test will reveal a haplotype, which should be similar among all male descendants of a male ancestor. SNP tests are used to assign people to a paternal haplogroup, which defines a much larger genetic population.

mtDNA testing involves sequencing or testing the HVR-1 region, HVR-2 region or both. An mtDNA test may also include the additional SNPs needed to assign people to a maternal haplogroup—or even include the complete mtDNA.

Either Y-DNA or mtDNA test results can be compared to the results of others via private or public DNA databases.

Biogeographical and ethnic origins

Additional DNA tests exist for determining biogeographical and ethnic origin, but these tests have less relevance for traditional genealogy.

Genetic genealogy has revealed astonishing links between peoples. For instance, it has shown that the ancient Phoenician people were ancestors of much of the present-day population of the island of Malta. Preliminary results from a study by Pierre Zalloua of the American University of Beirut and Spencer Wells, supported by a grant from National Geographic’s Committee for Research and Exploration, were published in the October 2004 issue of ”National Geographic”. One of the conclusions is that “more than half of the Y chromosome lineages that we see in today’s Maltese population could have come in with the Phoenicians.”

”See biogeographic ancestry, genealogical DNA test and population genetics (the study of the distribution of and change in allele frequencies).”

Human migration

Genealogical DNA testing methods are also being used on a longer time scale to trace human migratory patterns. For example, they have been used to determine when the first humans came to North America and what path they followed.

For several years, a number of researchers and laboratories from around the world have been sampling indigenous populations from around the globe in an effort to map historical human migration patterns. Recently, several projects have been created that are aimed at bringing this science to the public. One example, mentioned in History above, is the National Geographic Society’s Genographic Project, which aims to map historical human migration patterns by collecting and analyzing DNA samples from over 100,000 people across five continents. Another example is the DNA Clans Genetic Ancestry Analysis, which measures a person’s precise genetic connections to indigenous ethnic groups from around the world.

Typical customers and interest groups

Male DNA testing customers most often start with a Y chromosome test to determine their father’s paternal ancestry. Females generally begin with a mitochondrial test to trace their ancient maternal lineage, which males often have tested for the same purpose.

A common consumer goal in purchasing DNA testing services is to acquire quantified, scientific linkage to a specific ancestral group. A compelling example of this motive is found in the expressed desires of some consumers to be proven to have Viking paternal ancestry. In keeping with this marketplace demand, one British DNA testing service, Oxford Ancestors, offers a Y chromosome test purporting to assess whether given males are of “Viking stock.” Those whose DNA falls into the designated haplogroup are issued Viking Descendant certificates by the testing service. The same DNA testing company participated in producing a televised documentary, “The Blood of the Vikings,” in conjunction with the BBC, which showed how DNA testing could reveal Viking ancestry.

The RootsWeb Genealogy-DNA Internet discussion group has a membership of 750 subscribers from around the world. Some subscribers have had various DNA tests performed and are seeking advice and guidance in interpreting their results. The list also includes administrators of DNA projects that examine surnames, geographic regions, or ethnic groups. The sophistication of subscribers ranges from expert to novice. In some cases, subscribers have been credited with making useful and novel contributions to knowledge in the field of genetic genealogy.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Genetic genealogy, under the G. If you’ve been doing genealogy for any length of time, you already know the big ones, but there are some very specialized websites out there that are much less known.

If you suspect that you may have some Native Indian roots in your family, then there is a wonderful site that offers information that may help you. Native American Nations is a good place to find Native American indexes and rolls, cemeteries, census records, stories, tribes and nations, land patents and history. They also offer old photos, linguistic information and sign language of Native Americans which makes for a very interesting visit. Be sure to check out their gift store.

If you have Canadian roots as I do, you know that their system can be very frustrating. They offer very little information online in searchable websites. Ingeneas.com is a good website that specializes in Canadian roots. There you can search immigration records and passenger lists from the 18th thru 20 centuries.

If you know you had relatives living in either the U.S. or the U.K the 1901 census is now available for free. Just search for two websites. The British site is UK1901census.com and the American census is at 1901censusonline.com.

The Olive Tree is another site for those working on a family tree with roots in North America. They have over 1900 transcribed records which include such things as: ship passenger records, Canadian immigration records, records for Huguenots, Walloons, Native Am<div

This website is the oldest free online database so there’s certainly more of a chance that you’ve heard about it. They offer a number of ways that you can connect with your fellow genealogists.

If you have transcribed any genealogical data, you should share it by posting it at their website. Many, many records find their way online because of the generous sharing of information by other genealogists so if you have information, sharing it is the right thing to do.

You should also post your family tree at Rootsweb and your surname interests. This will let others find you more easily. A wealth of information can also be found on their many message boards. These can be searched by your name of interest which will help you zone in on others that may already have the information that you seek.

You can also join a mailing list or post a note on a record. That way you will keep in touch with others with similar interest as you. The post a note feature was a very clever idea and I’m glad they thought of it. What you do, is attach a note with your contact information to a particular record of a family member in their Social Security Death Index. Then when another person searching for this person finds the record they also find you and can contact you to share information.

These are just some of the more popular websites that offer free online genealogical databases. The wonderful thing about genealogy is that there is always more out there to sort through. The gem you are seeking is now easier than ever to find thanks to the generosity of others and the ease of sharing things through the internet.

Kay Cromwell has been researching her family tree for over a decade now. Only few countries or states are offering online information about marriage records. It has been largely observed that the branch maintaining public records have not entered all those information into online records but most of the records are being inserted by the efforts of genealogy enthusiasts and researchers. Earlier all the records were being maintained manually and as and when they find time, they must be transferring them using online means. There are chances that the records may be maintained inaccurately with incorrect information documented in public. Especially when the public records are being maintained by the government agencies there could always be a chance of offering manipulated or outdated information. Searching marriage records is mainly to find out if someone has been married earlier and to whom, even the current partner would throw some light on their previous relationships. RootsWeb is the site maintaining nationwide marriage database of most of the people. This is not a source of government offerings but it offers reliable information about the marriage records.

It is always advisable to have the complete background check of a person. The first criteria of any online background check are the website should be well connected with the public records directory. The second criteria are all the public records should be maintained using online means. If they are maintained manually then website would not be of any help. Some types of records are maintained with great care like criminal and court records, birth and death records, marriage records etc and it would be easy to find out the required details of a person through internet. Many times a person does not have any trace except his mobile number. Now if the number is listed with the directory, it would be easy to find out the information of a person through the documents has submitted with the service provider. But if the number is not listed then one has to take the help of any powerful search engine and run reverse cell phone lookup. All those websites connected with the data link of the service provider would get some available information about that cell number. www.snoopstation.com is a genuine site well connected with all the branches of online public records and offering instant background check totally free of charge.

For more insights and further information about Background Check visit our site http://www.snoopstation.com/<br

If in fact you are seeking divorce records that you know date back this far, you may be able to find them using sites like Ancestry and RootsWeb.

Or, you can check your local library to see if they have a local history room. Many libraries do have such a room where vital records from centuries past are kept. Another place to look is your city or county government building. Of course, if you are seeking modern divorce records you will need to pay a fee.

There are various reasons why you may need to find divorce records. One reason is that you are getting remarried and need to provide a certified copy of your previous divorce records in order to get a marriage license. Or, you may be seeking divorce records for someone else.

Divorce records are public and available to anyone who pays the applicable fee. How much it will cost to obtain these records depends on the state in which you live. For example, it costs $10 in New York City to get divorce records. In California, the cost is $13. Certain states have varying costs when it comes to their public records.

The Internet can be a very helpful resource when you are searching for vital records. For example, the website of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) offers plenty of information about obtaining birth and death certificates as well as marriage and divorce records from all the states. You can find out where to<div

Another option is to use web sites like SearchSystems or Akiba. These sites can often help you obtain the records you need quickly and easily, for a fee of course. Usually these fees may be a bit more than your Vital Records Department will charge but for the convenience of doing business online it is often worth it.

The final option if others are not viable is to obtain the services of a private investigator. Private eyes can usually get their hands on all sorts of records not available in other avenues. This option is the most expensive, but will save you time and the process is guaranteed success or no money is exchanged.

Chad Kiser

Author Bio

To Learn How to Conduct a <a

Five Fun Educational Programs

This is a list of five educational programs that can be a lot of fun. Educational programs aren’t just for kids, people of all ages can enjoy these programs and enjoy learning new information. For download links to these programs, check out my website at http://www.EasyTechReviews.com.

Anyway, here are the five programs that in my opinion you should download. They are in no particular order.

1. Seterra

This is a fun little program. Seterra has many different exercises for learning geography. For instance, there are quizzes on country capitals, state capitals, major cities, country flags, mountains and volcanos, etc.

My personal favorite exercise is where you try to identify numerous countries by clicking on a blank map. It’s a great way to get good at identifying countries.

In addition, this program also keeps track of high scores, so you can compete against family and friends. And best of all… it’s totally free!

2. Google Earth

This is a program that a lot of people have heard of. But I had to put it here because if you have not used this program, seriously, try it out! Google Earth is an absolutely amazing program full of lots of information. And there is so much information constantly being added.

With Google Earth, you can view satellite maps of the world. But it’s not just that, you can see pictures all over the world (some of them 360 views), links to youtube videos, links to wikipedia entries, traffic conditions, etc. etc. etc.

Seriously… In the time it would take for me to explain what all Google Earth has, you could have already downloaded it. Just go download it.

3. Real Lives

This is a fun little program. Basically… you get to live the life of a person in the world. You can pick the country and create your character, or have your character randomly picked.

To some, this may sound a lot like the Sims, but it isn’t like the Sims at all. In Real Lives you can’t actually see your character. You don’t control his daily actions. Each turn simulates one year. But you can pick your characters career, hobbies, finances, relationships, etc.

Where the educational value comes in is how much you learn from trying to have your character succeed in various countries. The country you live in will really affect how your character does. For example, in the past I have had characters in the United States who did really well career wise. I’ve had other characters in Africa that died in the first few years from disease. I’ve also had characters that were involved in social activism that were executed in various countries with dictators. Like I said, the country your character lives in will affect a lot how they live, and in the process you learn a lot about how people live around the world.

The only downside to this program is that it is only free to try. Unless you buy it, there is an opening screen with a delay. But I still recommend checking it out. And want a challenge? Try creating a character in a country like Somalia and getting them to live till they are 80. Good luck on that one.

4. WorldWide Telescope

This is an awesome program put out by Microsoft. I am going to keep the description for this program simple. Basically you can see a real map of the nightsky full of real pictures. Think of like google earth but looking at the sky. See a galaxy that’s in the sky that you like? Find it on this program and zoom in to find some closeup photos of the galaxy from the Hubble Telescope. If you have any kind of interest in Astronomy, download this!

5. MyHeritage Family Tree Builder

This is a GREAT program for building your family tree. I absolutely love this program and I’ve been using it for awhile now. I have imported many GEDCOM databases into a giant database for my family tree. I have thousands and thousands of distant relatives listed on it. How am I related to some relative that lived 200 years ago across the country? This program will tell me just that and the complete line of how exactly we are related. Very very cool. And for getting information about your family tree, I recommend checking out Rootsweb.com

I hope you enjoyed this list. And remember, learning doesn’t have to be boring. There are a lot of ways to have fun and learn new information at the same time. Have fun! <img
