Nagatada was part of the senior branch of the Ogasawara.

The Ogasawara clan originated in 12th century Shinano province. They claim descent from Takeda Yoshikiyo and as part of the Seiwa-Genji. The great grand-son of Yoshikiyo, Nagakiyo, was the first to take the name Ogasawara. The area controlled by the senior branch of his descendants grew to encompass the entire province of Shinano. Nagakiyo’s grandson, Ogawawara Hidemasa (1569–1615), served Ieyasu; and in 1590, Hidemasa received Koga Domain (20,000 ”koku”) in Shimōsa province. In 1601, Ieyasu transferred Hidemasa to Iida Domain (50,000 ”koku”) in Shinano ; then, in 1613, he was able to return to the home of his forebears, Fukashi Castle (80,000 ”koku”), now known as Matsumoto Castle.

This senior branch of the ”fudai” Ogasawara from the beginning were ”daimyō” at Fukashi; then, in 1617, the ”daimyō” was transferred to Akashi Domain (120,000 ”koku”) in Harima province. In the years spanning 1632 through 1868, the descendants of this branch of the Ogasawara were ”daimyō” at Kokura Domain (150,000 ”koku”) in Buzen province; and Nagatada’s descendants would be part of this line.

The Ogasawara would prosper during the years of Tokugawa shogunate. During the Edo period, the Ogasawara were identified as one of the ”fudai” or insider ”daimyō” clans which were hereditary vassels or allies of the Tokdugawa, in contrast with the ”tozama” or outsider clans.

The heads of ”fudai” Ogasawara clan branches would be ennobled in the Meiji period.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Ogasawara Nagatada, under the G.

Llywelyn was born about 1173, the son of Iorwerth ap Owain and the grandson of Owain Gwynedd, who had been ruler of Gwynedd until his death in 1170. Llywelyn was a descendant of the senior line of Rhodri Mawr and therefore a member of the princely house of Gwynedd. He was probably born at Dolwyddelan though not in the present Dolwyddelan castle, which was built by Llywelyn himself. He may have been born in the old castle which occupied a rocky knoll on the valley floor. Little is known about his father, Iorwerth Drwyndwn, who died when Llywelyn was an infant. There is no record of Iorwerth having taken part in the power struggle between some of Owain Gwynedd’s other sons following Owain’s death, although he was the eldest surviving son. There is a tradition that he was disabled or disfigured in some way that excluded him from power.

By 1175, Gwynedd had been divided between two of Llywelyn’s uncles. Dafydd ab Owain held the area east of the River Conwy and Rhodri ab Owain held the west. Dafydd and Rhodri were the sons of Owain by his second marriage to Cristin ferch Goronwy ab Owain. This marriage was not considered valid by the church as Cristin was Owain’s first cousin, a degree of relationship which according to Canon law prohibited marriage. Giraldus Cambrensis refers to Iorwerth Drwyndwn as the only legitimate son of Owain Gwynedd. Following Iorwerth’s death, Llywelyn was, at least in the eyes of the church, the legitimate claimant to the throne of Gwynedd.

Llywelyn’s mother was Marared, occasionally anglicised to Margaret, daughter of Madog ap Maredudd, prince of Powys. There is evidence that, after her first husband’s death, Marared married in the summer of 1197, Gwion, the nephew of Roger Powys of Whittington Castle. She seems to have pre-deceased her husband, after bearing him a son, David ap Gwion, and therefore there can be no truth in the story that she married into the Corbet family of Caus Castle (near Westbury, Shropshire) and later, Moreton Corbet Castle.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Llywelyn the Great, under the G. Charles O’Higgins’ grandfather, Sean Duff O’Higgins, held the Gaelic territorial title of ”Tiarna” or Lord of Ballinary, and he was married to Margaret O’Conor, who was of the Royal House of O’Conor of Ballintober Castle, which ruled Ireland until the year 1000.

The O’Higgins family were a sept of the O’Neill dynasty who migrated to Sligo in the 12th century. As Gaelic nobles they had owned great expanses of land particularly in the Irish counties of Sligo and Westmeath, but with the expropriations of Catholics by Oliver Cromwell, and the deportation of tenants to County Sligo after the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland ca. 1654, the O’Higgins’ lands became smaller and smaller. Due to this encroachment into their land, the O’Higgins family migrated to Summerhill in County Meath, where they became lowly tenant farmers and worked in the service of the Rowley-Langford family. Their descendents remain in Summerhill however, the last member of the name O’Higgins in Summerhill died in 1947. The O’Higgins graves are located in The Moy and Agher cemeteries, both within the boundaries of the Roman Catholic parish of Dangan in Summerhill.

Descendants

In 1777, Ambrosio O’Higgins became acquainted with the powerful Riquelme family from Chillán, and fell in love with the daughter, Isabel, almost forty years his junior (she was 16 at the time, while he was 57 years old.) He promised marriage, but colonial law forbade marriage between public officials and criolla women without authorization of the crown. To disregard this law was to risk career and position. It isn’t known why he didn’t seek permission, but no marriage ensued even when Isabel became pregnant. Perhaps her family disapproved of the match.

Doña Isabel gave birth to Ambrosio’s only son, Bernardo, in August of 1778. Bernardo O’Higgins would later lead Chile to its independence from the Spanish Empire. Two years later, Doña Isabel married Félix Rodríguez with whom she had a daughter, Rosa Rodríguez Riquelme. Though Ambrosio O’Higgins never saw or officially recognised this son as his legal heir, he paid for his education in England and left him a portion of his possessions in Peru and Chile.

Adapted from the Wikipedia article Ambrosio O’Higgins, 1st Marquis of Osorno, under the G.
