Canavan disease is characterized by macrocephaly, lack of head control, and developmental delays by the age of three to five months, severe hypotonia, and failure to achieve independent sitting, ambulation, or speech. Hypotonia eventually changes to spasticity.
Symptoms of Canavan disease, which appear in early infancy and progress rapidly, may include mental retardation, loss of previously acquired motor skills, feeding difficulties, abnormal muscle tone (floppiness or stiffness).
