Connecticut
Many early settlers came to Connecticut from the Massachusetts Bay because of dissatisfaction with the religious and political leadership, and for the fertile farm lands on the river. In 1614 a Dutch mariner Adriaen Block explored the Connecticut River and about 19 years later the Dutch established a trading post where Hartford is now. The settlement of 3 other towns of Connecticut took place shortly after this. Roger Ludlow and a few others moved to Windsor in the summer and fall of 1635. A large number of families from Watertown founded Wethersfield in 1635-36, they were led by two ministers, Richard Denton and John Sherman. The most famous migration to the Connecticut River
Valley occurred in June 1636, when Thomas Hooker went from Newtown to the
site of Hartford.
