Your family tree will be far more interesting and fully fleshed out if you take some extra time to invite a few helpers to the job. To get the best job that you can, you will want to have several others to help you with your research. Family tree research can be interesting and fun, but it is also a bit of work. You will find that you hit a few road blocks along the way and you might save yourself a bit of time resolving them if you have someone else from another branch of the family who is helping you with the genealogy.
The family tree of everyone has multiple branches, and sometimes those can turn into twigs. You will find bits of information that are so small, you're not quite sure what to do with them. Don't ever throw away anything that has to do with your research. Family tree research is ongoing for literally decades. You may come across one name, with no maiden name or surname and five years from now, that little tidbit will reveal itself to you and you're going to do that "oh sure" and be glad that you kept that name or birth date.
Genealogy isn't always as easily accomplished as we might wish and in some cases its not an exact science. The records that you will find aren't always going to have the right spelling or the right name and you may find conflicting birthdates or birth areas. In these cases, saving both of the bits of information that you get will help you vastly in the "down the road" research. Family tree tracing tends to be something that you're going to get into fully or not enjoy at all. If you're like most of us and get into it great guns, you will require vast tomes, or loose leaf books to keep all of your records and will refer to them over and over again, as you dig through and place the members of your family from long ago to present day.
A family tree or a family history however, is also something that you're going to be pleased with in the end, and feel very proud of having accomplished. They do make wonderful gifts to give to older family members. Imagine the memories that you can bring back to them as they go through the tree, remembering a grandmother or a favorite aunt that you've uncovered.
Take the time to do the proper research and don't let yourself be hung up to much on the names, the spellings or the conflicting information, and discount that person as a relative. Remember that in the days when many of these records were written, the fully legible ink pens of today or the typewritten pages weren't available to us. Save it all and then decipher it as you can. In the end you're going to be glad you didn't toss away that little bit of paper that you considered an erroneous entry.
