The Best Way to Find a Person with Whom You Lost Contact

Have you lost contact with an old friend from school? The best way to find a person is to go online. It’s odd how we let some of the most important relationships from our early lives wane. It is possible to “google” someone, but that doesn’t really give you more than basic information, and only then if they have done something that has gotten on the Internet. For example, the only entry you will find for me is a letter to the editor I sent more than five years ago.

No, if you really want to find an old friend, you want to get yourself on a search service and let them do the tracking.

Search services have paid to have access to all sorts of informational databases.  From old phone numbers to current addresses, nation wide, they can put you back in touch.  If you have enough information about your friend’s past, the search engine used by these services can narrow down your choices to a few likely candidates.  Then it is up to you to select the most likely candidate and make contact.  If you didn’t pick the right one, well, you still have other options to consider.  With barely any effort on your part you can reestablish that old friendship you are missing.

There are services online that imply that they will provide you with this information free of charge.  Don’t believe them.  The fact is that once you get beyond entering your data they will confirm that they have a number of matches, and even show you those matches names and city, but they won’t disclose anything else.  To get to the next step you will need to pay.  Now you have to make the decision of whether or not the information is worth a few dollars.  Of course you might be wondering why you should pay at all, if you too could get access to this information.

The fact is that it isn’t easy to get into the listing databases.  Many charge for their services as well, and they aren’t all cheap.  The search service has paid for the information and they are forwarding it to you, often for a lot less.  In addition, if you pay for an annual membership than you can search for more than one person, allowing you to use the databases for a genealogical search at the same time.  It really is worth a few dollars.  Go ahead, get online and take a look, find a person you miss and see how easy it is to reconnect.
