Systems Application Architecture or SAA as it is popularly known was introduced by IBM in 1987 as a strategy for client-server or enterprise computing. The prime reason behind its introduction was an attempt at the reduction of incompatibilities between a group of IBM hardware, which also included mainframes, minicomputers and PCs. In the simplest form, it was an architectural design that was made up of some software interfaces, protocols and conventions for the development of integrated applications used in the widely prevalent IBM computing environments. The structure of this architecture comprises four main components, which are Common User Access (CUA) for GUI buildup, Common Programming Interface (CPI) for application enhancement, Common Communication Support (CCS) and Common Applications for easy user migration between systems. Owing to the possibilities opened up through its networked application sharing, web based development took on a new shape and gave a new leash of life to network architecture.

The area of web sites development has seen some drastic developmental phases since the last several years now, and a lot of the contributory efforts have come from network architectures like the SAA. In fact, professional web development relies heavily on the application of similar structures like this. As a follow up to the success of the SAA, it was later taken over by an expansion enterprise strategy for network computing called Open Blueprint. This has given a much sought after leverage to the activity of development of website across various verticals. IBM has brought about much change to the area of application creation by developing such enterprises that could be assured of consistency and program portability throughout its wide array of computer systems.

This has opened diverse channels of customer entry into the investment field, where they have made substantial amount of investments on legacy applications. Application development has always been a very proactive area for major players, and IBM has held a strong influence on stakeholders worldwide.
