In 2002 we spent 4 days in South Carolina because we had never been there.
In these 4 days we drove around what is called the Lowcountry and had
a wonderful time. I was amazed at the amount of history that South Carolina has
to offer and is well taken care of also.
We visited a lot of places and I decided to show the pictures that I took.
I love cemeteries, old churches and anything that has to do with history.
I hope that someone out there will enjoy these pictures.

Old Sheldon Church (near Yemassee)
I loved this site because of the ruins and the cemetery surrounding it.
Here is a website that tells some of the history surrounding the church.
http://www.apexrealty.com/BullPoint/history.html
Dating back to 1748, Old Sheldon Church is a quiet setting for the ruins of the Old
Sheldon Church. The church was burned the first time by the British in 1780 and
again by Sherman's army in 1865 during his march to the sea.

Old Baptist Church
Hwy 174 Edisto Island
This church, dedicated in 1818, is historically significant as a church founded by a woman, Hephzibah Jenkins Townsend. Baptists had worshiped on Edisto since 1686 but there was no church.   In 1811, she obtained the original church site and erected the building.
In the late 1860's the trustees turned it over to the black members who
have operated it since. Another site claims that the church was founded in 1810. And describes
Hepzibah Jenkins as "strong-willed woman raised by her family's slaves after her mother died and
her father was imprisoned during the American Revolution. She was grateful to these people
that she built this church for them in 1810."

Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island
This church was constructed in 1830 which replaced the original building erected in 1710. By the early 1800's, Edisto planters began to accumulate a great wealth from the production of Sea Island Cotton.  Worship was an important part of their lives, so when they began to prosper, that
prosperity was reflected in the new church of Classic Greek Revival architecture.
This structure has survived enemy occupation and hurricanes.
The large graveyard has many moments of which some date back to 1785.

Beaufort Arsenal
The Arsenal is one of the historical sites in Beaufort, it was completed in 1798.
Beaufort led the secessionist movement in the 1850s and the local citizens raised money to expand the
building in 1852.  The Arsenal was occupied by the U.S. Army when Union forces invaded in 1861.  The Arsenal was expanded a third time in the 1930s.It was during that time that a wing was
designated as the museum.

Bluffton
Bluffton Historic Village has many old homes, churches and many other sites to see.
Most of the old homes, which were beautiful, are private residence. I feel uncomfortable posting pictures of someones private home but the homes were beautiful and well worth the drive around town to find them. There is a visitors center in town where you can obtain the map which shows where all the places are located. Below are 2 of the places on the tour, the church and an old store.

I hope that you enjoyed these pictures and try searching for other info on these and many more sites in South Carolina.
